Dillon Howling
My idiosyncratic way of looking at the world, is something I wish to communicate through my artistic practice. Play, musical sound and dialogue all inspire my work. Presenting childlike and simplistic forms, I often find myself questioning the value of sculpture and what it is today. I enjoy personifying my sculptures to generate amusing characters which can exist on their own.
I find play and learning very interesting, it is the starting point of my works. I reflect upon childhood and silliness, which is apparent within my illustrations and animations. I am pushing this idea forward and wish to create sculptures that have the imagination and freedom found in drawing and cartoons.
Musical sound is another important component in my work: I consider sound within every piece I produce, whether present or not. I like adding sound to my works because it adds mediation between the known and the unknown, linking physical things with imagination and complexity. I believe sound is invasive and in-escapable, unlike many other stimuli. I often contemplate ideas whilst playing the piano.
I like to illustrate my ideas on paper and then decide the best way to produce the works visually for a space. I like maintaining a balance between planned works and spontaneous ones/playing with materials. I like using a spectrum of media, I believe it helps me produce a variety of works and allows me to have complete control over what I want to convey. I am constantly looking for new ways of creating works.
